About you;

Tell us about yourself

I live in Derbyshire in the UK with my husband and two black cats. I have always had a keen interest in writing and a vivid imagination. At the age of 16 I wrote my first romance short story as a hobby and never thought about publishing. After a few jobs I re-evaluated my life and have become an author full time specialising in Paranormal Romance Erotica with the support of friends and family. I am an Indie author and published my first novel Rising Dawn in April 2013 which was quickly followed by the novella Burning Desire: Juliet’s Story. I am currently working on the next instalment in the Jessica Dawn Series and am hoping to release Darkest Dawn September 2013. They are testament that through hard work, imagination and a little help from friends anything is possible and dreams can happen.

Share with us some of your interests

I love movies and gadgets.  Ok I’m a Geek I openly admit it!  But I love it and where would we be without technology?  My brain is like an internal movie screen anyway so watching movies on the big screen come part and parcel for me.  LOVE IT!

What makes you the person you are?

The love and support of my friends and family.  It’s amazing what you can do when you know you are loved and not judged.  A lot of people fear writing erotica because of the stigma around the genre but with the correct support why not take that leap of faith?

About your writing;

When did you start writing?

I started officially writing in March 2013. I had always enjoyed writing at school but never took it any further.

What inspires you to write?

My readers inspire me to write. If only one person loves my writing it’s the best feeling in the world.

How has writing change you as a person?

My writing has made me a much more confident person because I have now done something that I thought would be impossible for me.

Adding some fun;

If you spend the rest of your life in a novel or novel series, what novel would it be and why?

I have to admit my secret pleasure is The Renegade Angel Series by Sylvia Day.  I love the way she has created a new world with Angels, Demons, Lycans and Vampires and I could happily live the rest of my life in it.  Adrian Mitchell however would have to be mine and he is quite welcome to argue with Elijah Reynolds for my attention.  Choosing a particular novel is hard but I do like A Hunger So Wild the second Novel in the series.

Share a couple of your favorite things and or things you like?

I love to write so that has to be one of my favourite things but I also like movies.  If my brain isn’t coming up with a story I like nothing more than going to the cinema with my hubby and watching everything I can.  I watch so many movies at the local cinema they know me by name and know what concessions I order.

What couldn’t you live without?

The internet.  Without this many Indie authors would never have been published and thanks to organisations like Createspace we can finally publish our own work.  If we didn’t have the internet we wouldn’t have accessible ebooks.  It has truly opened up a very big world.

In the literacy world who do you think is a misunderstood character and why?

Sabina Kane in Jaye Wells series of the same name.  She is always ass kicking through all the Novels but she is so lonely and vulnerable.  I think it’s important that strong characters have a softer side and I do the same in my own series.  I loved this series and was gutted when it ended even though I didn’t like Sabina as a character at the beginning.  At the start it’s easy to misunderstand her as cold hearted but as the series progresses you see her as so much more.

Have you read anything that made you think differently about writing?

The moment I read 50 Shades of Grey it changed my reading and writing life.  I realised there was suddenly a market for erotica and it was time I wrote what I loved.  The fact that it was originally self-published was an amazing achievement and changed my views on self-publishing.

Is there a character that annoys you in the literacy world? Or even one of your own?

Edward Cullen!!!  He’s such a wimp of a Vampire and he sparkles.  I rest my case.

What do you look for in a publishing company as they will end up representing your work?

One word – support.  There’s a difference between offering good support and wanting you to re-write your Novel to such a degree it isn’t what you wanted it to be.

How do you stay confident in yourself especially by putting yourself out there in the internet world?

I openly admit I am such a self-conscious writer I do my own head in.  But I am a strong believer that if only one person likes my writing then I have done a good job.  I get my confidence from my friends who encourage me to stop hiding.  Once I did I found there was nothing to fear anymore.

How do you handle rejection? What advice can you offer to moving past it?

I think I’ve gotten used to rejection over the years.  Years ago I used to be a sales person so I simply heard no a thousand of times so I just got over it in the end.  The thing is as writers it is a given fact that we all love to write and that first step out of our own mind onto paper is hard enough.  Not every will like what I write but I don’t write for those people.  I write for the people who will see my heart and soul written on the page and enjoy my stories.  It is these people that make me want to carry on not the people who reject me.  Everyone is entitled to an opinion so you just have to shrug your shoulders, pick yourself up and realise it is their loss not yours!

Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?

DON’T GIVE UP!  I started writing to help with my depression and nothing more.  I thought my writing was ok but nothing special and then one day I decided to join a book club on Facebook because I was reading so many books thanks to insomnia.  For once I was open about myself and my writing discussing my WIP with them.  One of them asked if I had any published work because she was interested in reading something I had written.  When I had finally picked up the courage to send her a couple of chapters I was a blubbering wreck because I thought it was rubbish.  Her response changed my life forever as she actually liked it and wanted to read more.  It was in that moment I realised that people would actually like my writing.  Three months later I have a Novel and a Novella published and a very close friend who encourages me every day.  All of this happened because I took a leap of faith and allowed someone else to read my writing.  So NEVER EVER GIVE UP!

Featuring your work and or upcoming work;

Tell us about your book [s]

My first novel Rising Dawn was published 15th April 2013 and follows Jess (a Pureblood vampire and written from her perspective) and Reuban (a wolf shifter).  It is Paranormal Erotica so for adult reader only 18+

The blurb:

Jessica Dawn has felt alone all her life and a personal tragedy has set her on a path of revenge and self-destruction. Always searching and longing for the family she lost has meant that she has spent the last two years hiding and fighting in the shadows. One night her life would change again, thrown into a world she never knew existed she will find horrors, hope, friendship, love and a strength she did not think she had. She is a Pureblood; the only known Vampire Pureblood in existence and she has been protected all her life by a secret organisation called the Council. Reuban is an Alpha, a Wolf that has sworn his life to this women and in the process has lost his heart. He will see that no harm will ever come to her and she is destined to forever hold his soul. From the moment he disobeyed orders and interfered in her life he knew he could no longer deny his Wolf and she would be his. An old threat is rising, Reuban and Jess will have to fight together for their lives and their love, a love that has been written by Fate herself. But can they overcome new lies and truths that could destroy the very world they are part of? The Queen and her army must be stopped before she can break her bonds and return to this world bringing Hell along for the ride. Jessica never asked for this life but she sure as hell won’t be going down without a fight and Reuban will be by her side for every second – bring it on!

My Novella follows Juliet (a vampire) one of the secondary characters in Rising Dawn and Troy (an elder witch).  My hope is that between novels I will continue to write novellas to explain the back stories to all my secondary characters as they have so much to tell.  I published this 15th May 2013 and as you may have guessed is also Paranormal erotica.

The blurb:

Juliet has been living her life day by day for over four hundred years but being burnt at the stake can do that to a woman. A lover lost had burned deep within her veins ever since and continues to cloud her judgment. A Vampire with a broken heart is not someone to be messed with but the Council has given her the escape she needs. However she also acquires a troublesome nineteen year old in the process that is in danger of melting her heart. Fate is laughing in Juliet’s face and situations are beginning to drag her designer clad ass through hell but with the help of friends a light is blooming on the horizon. Troy has lived with secrets all his life and his family have paid deeply for them at the hands of Juliet. His heart is torn between his love for her and the need for revenge but every time he sees her he cannot control his desires. He knows he can never replace the love she lost but he hopes he can open her heart again and make her realise she is not the ‘Ice Bitch’ she believes.

Who is your favorite character and why? [If you can share without spoiling your work]

My favourite character is Jess.  I wanted her to be ass kicking because I was so fed up of women in erotica novels being weak relying on their alpha male.  I like writing the need for dominance by Reuban for Jess to shrug her shoulders and show him that she can also be possessive of him showing it goes both ways.  She takes no shit but also shows her vulnerable side and I try and write as much emotion in as I can because no one ever blindly accepts situations beyond their control, no matter how strong they are.

What character do you hope readers understand?

Juliet.  Her character progresses so much through the first novel and it is one of the reasons I gave her a novella.  Secondary characters play a huge role in the way I tell my stories and I believe they are entitled to have their own story told.  Juliet is the first novella in the series but my other characters will also have theirs.  Her novella gives a little back ground into why she is called the ‘Ice Bitch’ and behaves the way she does.  I hope readers can see her journey through Rising Dawn and can understand why she does the things she does.

Do you have a favorite part of your own book (s) ?

There is a very hot sex scene that involves clothes being ripped off, doors demolished and beds breaking.  That is by far my favourite scene from Rising Dawn.  Did I mention I love writing Paranormal Erotica?

Choosing a character or even yourself, can you give us a sample playlist of music that would follow said person?

Oh my God I already have one!  This is some of my playlist for Jess;

One way or another – One Direction/Blondie

Try – Pink

Fuck You – Cee Lo Green

Are you gonna go my way – Lenny Kravitz

Can’t Handle Me – FloRida featuring David Guetta

Pump It – Black Eyed Peas

The King is dead but the Queen is alive – Pink

The Sun goes down – David Jordon

Breathless – Shane Ward

Winter Winds – Mumford and Sons

Man Eater – Nelly Furtado

Have you had trouble writing about any of your characters?

Jess has always been quite difficult because I want to get her emotion right and when I do its ‘grab a box of tissue’ time.

What would you like readers to get from your book (s) ?

Enjoyment and to feel the emotion in the story.  To follow Jess on her journey, to laugh and cry with her.

In your book (s) what had been the hardest challenge you’ve faced so far?

Believing in myself and my characters.

How is this world a better place because of your books?

I can’t say that the world is a better place but my life definitely is.  Because of Rising Dawn my depression feels much better, I feel a stronger person and I have a friend that means the world to me.  All of this happened because I decided not to press delete and realise a dream I didn’t think I had.  If my books have made the world a better place for someone else then I have achieved something great in my life.

If you could meet any of your own characters, who would (they / it) be?

I would love to meet Jess’ father.  He is a big question in Rising Dawn and he takes his own part in Darkest Dawn so I can’t say much more.

If you had to write a scene for a character of your choice that would put them in an awkward situation how would it go?

Awkward situation is Jess’ middle name so there are quite a few!  My favourite is when Maria (Jess’s best friend) gives her a jumbo box of condoms for her weekend away with Reuban and all she wants is the ground to open up and swallow her.  There are so many moments and I have a scene that consists of a kiss that doesn’t involve Reuban but I can say no more!

What do you to for marketing?

I have my own website and Facebook helps no end.  I try and do as many interviews as I can online and for local newspapers etc.  I produced merchandise and had limited edition copies of Rising Dawn.  But most of all I respect word of mouth and reviews.

Promote your books in a sentence or less 🙂

If you like romance, humor, emotion and the occasional hot sex scene with a kick ass supernatural cast then go out and buy RISING DAWN!

Juliet has been misjudged by everyone, even you, so go right back to the beginning and understand her ‘why’ in BURNING DESIRE.

(If more than one work, a sentence for EACH work, you’re not limited to one sentence for more than one piece of work.)

What are you working on now?

My current WIP is Darkest Dawn which follows on directly from Rising Dawn.  The plot thickens and this time is written from two perspectives; Jess and her father (who I can’t tell you who it is as it would be a massive spoiler for Rising Dawn).  I am hoping this will be released 1st September 2013.

The blurb:

The Darkest Days are finally upon us and the Daughters of Eve shall rise again.

Jess sacrificed herself for the people she loved but she now has to pay the consequences for her actions because something dark is coming and it is heading straight for her. She really did not think her life could get any more complicated but when another tall dark stranger walks back into her life she realises she has a decision to make. All she wants is for everyone to leave her alone and let her live the life she thought she once had but things are getting out of control fast. The love she has for Reuban can only ground her for so long and her anger is beginning to spiral out of control. If she tells him how she really feels she could lose him forever or get him killed and that is a risk she could never forgive herself for.

The Council have accepted her for what she is but has she? There is a huge possibility everyone she loves is going to die if she stays, but if she walks away she will have to leave the love of her life behind and that would rip her soul apart.

The only way out is to work with the one person she hates more than anything in this world and that was going to take a lot of self-restraint if she was going to get through this nightmare without killing him.

Reuban can see the torment within Jess and it is breaking his heart. He would do anything to ease her pain even if it meant letting her walk away, destroying him in the process. His only hope is to seek guidance from Brigate and finally understand the true meaning of Megan’s Prophecy. It started with a Prophecy and it is there he will find the truth and it is a secret that could tear the Council to pieces.

A fractured alliance will be formed again with a new generation of warriors and Jess is at its centre. The war is about to begin and a destiny will finally be fulfilled!

I will also have a companion for the series as another ongoing project that will have character interviews and deleted scenes which will be released early next year.

    Very nice interview. It is always interesting to read what other writers have to say. I especially reading self published writers, it gives inspiration. Thank you for helping bring them to the forefront.

Express your thoughts =)
